Credit card preauthorisation: what it is and how it works
A card preauthorisation reserves part of a customer's available credit without transferring funds. The merchant later captures the final amount or voids the hold. Visa and Mastercard holds can remain technically valid for about 30-31 days, while the issuer controls the actual release time.
Authorisation, capture and release
The merchant sends an estimated authorisation; the issuer approves and reserves the amount. At checkout or return, the merchant captures all or part of it. If no capture is needed, a void releases the hold, subject to the issuer's processing time.
Where preauthorisation is used
Hotels, car rental, clinics and pre-orders use holds when the final amount is unknown. Online flows should use 3D Secure 2 and tokenisation, while a PMS integration keeps authorisation, capture and void events traceable.
Perguntas frequentes
How long does a preauthorisation last?
The technical window can reach about 30-31 days for Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Release usually takes 1-7 days for credit cards and can take 21-30 days for debit or prepaid cards.
Does a preauthorisation reduce available credit?
Yes. It reserves the amount and reduces available funds, but it is not a completed payment until capture.
